Pelosi???s Attack on Gingrich Is a Political Ruse (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Nancy Pelosi made big news this week when the former House Speaker suggested in a CNN interview that she knows something about Newt Gingrich that could disqualify his candidacy. Her cryptic comment came only days before the critical Florida primary. Pelosi has since backed off from the suggestion, though she is still adamant Gingrich won’t be the Republican nominee. What should be made of the House Minority Leader’s claim?

If Pelosi did have some damaging information on Gingrich, she would not have made the veiled comment at this time. No one in Washington understands politics better than the former House Speaker. There is no plausible advantage for Pelosi, who is a Democrat, to show her “trump card” at this point of the campaign. If she did know something about Gingrich that the public don’t, she would have kept it to herself until after Gingrich has won the nomination before exposing the damaging information.

Pelosi’s veiled threat was either a complete exaggeration or a political ruse meant to influence the outcome of the Republican nomination contest. All indicators seem to point to the latter.

What politicians from both parties fear the most is a political survivor. Gingrich has demonstrated over and over again an ability to overcome political setbacks. After poor finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, not many insiders gave him a chance in South Carolina. Yet, he managed to beat Romney by a double-digit margin. This is something a shrewd politician like Pelosi would pick up on, and could be one of the motives behind the mysterious comment.

Moreover, President Obama and the Democrats have assumed all along that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. A lot of opposition research has already been done on Romney. Obama’s class-warfare theme is clearly meant to draw sharp contrasts between the president as the populist and the Bain Capital co-founder as the Wall Street elite. Romney may be the most formidable GOP candidate, but he also fits well into Democrats’ campaign theme.

With most polls showing Romney surging in Florida, Pelosi may have just gotten her wish.

’30 Rock’: Jenna Stars In The Star-Packed ‘Martin Luther King Day’ Movie (VIDEO)

Taking a hint from the recent films “New Year’s Day” and “Valentine’s Day,” where the philosophy is to pack as many stars into the film as possible regardless of logic or plot, Jenna Maroney stars in the latest holiday-themed romantic comedy. On the second of two episodes of “30 Rock” (Thu., 9 p.m. EST on NBC), she premiered the trailer for ‘Martin Luther King Day,’ featuring Nick Cannon, Emma Stone, Andrew Samberg, Liam Neeson, Kristen Bell, John Krasinski and the king of romantic comedies Hugh Grant, among tons of other celebrities.

The trailer captured perfectly the predictability of those movies, as well as the derivative plots and dialogue. At one scene, Cannon tells Jenna, “Sounds like … you have a dream!”

All of this set up an episode wherein Liz realized that Jenna was far too self-absorbed to be a good friend, so she sets out to find a new best friend. Unfortunately, she finds a woman just like herself, and finds that she doesn’t like it when they’re both complaining unceasingly. It’s so much better when the friend isn’t listening at all, so Liz can just vent.

While this was happening, Jack shut down the page program, replacing them with NK (Not Kenneth) units that supposedly know more than even Kenneth does. But NK doesn’t catch a foolish mistake Jack makes — sending the one-year anniversary gifts for the new owner to the 6th floor instead of the 60th. The 6th floor where “TGS” is filmed!

“30 Rock” airs every Thursday at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

State Of The Union Draws Mixed Reactions From Junior Statesmen

High school students focus heavily on President Obama’s stance on education reform.

One of the most important lessons high school-age members of the Junior State of America learn is the value of vigorous yet civil debates about the state of government and foreign affairs.

That’s why a handful of JSA members contacted by MTV News on Wednesday (January 25) had widely divergent but measured reactions to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

“The most significant part of his speech for me was his take on education,” said Saaye Arumugam, a 17-year-old high school senior in Miamisburg, Ohio. “During the Bush administration with No Child Left Behind, the federal government perpetuated this idea that standardized education was the only route to gauge success. Obama addressed that critical thinking should outweigh this idea of standardized thinking and teaching to the test.”

Obama called for states to require students to stay in school until age 18 and to replace teachers who are ineffective. The portion about lowering college interest rates also piqued the interest of home-schooled senior Chris Boyajian of Lumberton, New Jersey. “When he talked about college tuition and getting interest rates down on loans and getting tuition lower, that was important to me,” said Boyajian, 17. “[But] I didn’t agree when he said that college is for everyone. I think it’s not. There are some people who wouldn’t fit in college, but I did like what he said about getting interest rates down so we’re not paying two or three times the loan.”

One reason Boyajian was so focused on the cost of college was because he’s planning to go to law school. “I’m trying very hard not to take out loans [for college] … I’m trying to pay with my family’s savings or merit-based scholarships.”

Because their organization is based on civil discourse, a number of the JSA members said they were disappointed by the gridlock in Washington and not particularly optimistic about the president’s chances of getting his initiatives passed, especially during an election year.

Englewood, California, senior Michael Escobar, 17, was hopeful that at least one would get pushed through: Obama’s call for a return of manufacturing to the U.S. “It’s essential for prosperity, and it rewards companies with tax breaks,” he said. “I will go to college soon and hopefully in the future there will be a job opening ready for me … A lot of students are investing a lot of money in bachelor’s and master’s, and there’s no guarantee of a job.”

Escobar also paid close attention to the president’s plans to reform education, since he said he’s seen firsthand the effect of the cuts in education at his school and worries that the gridlock in Congress could stall Obama’s initiatives.

“We have a lot of low-income families at my school, and it’s really frustrating,” he said about budget cuts to education. As a member of student council with access to budget and attendance information, Escobar said that since funding for advanced placement exams at his school dried up, some of the low-income families have to pay nearly $300 for AP classes out of their own pockets. “Colleges are asking for those most difficult courses, but there’s not enough funding for education to cover it.”

Austin, Texas high school senior Nick Goulding said he found himself getting increasingly irritated as the speech went on. “President Obama was saying the same things he’s been saying for three years ago now,” said Goulding, 18. “He’s trying to make people feel bad about being successful in America. When he was talking about millionaires and trying … to alienate them about their success. I don’t know why you’d want that in a president.” As an example, he mentioned his father, who came from a poor family and worked his way up to founding a very successful landscaping company. “Increasing taxes on those who are successful is counterproductive to what should occur in a free country.”

And while Goulding was not enthused about the president’s call for a “Buffett tax” on millionaires and billionaires, he did appreciate how respectful Obama was when talking about the armed forces. “One of the few things I do attribute to the President as far as successes is killing Osama bin Laden and ending the wars,” he said.

As a high school junior at the Orange County High School of the Arts, Julianna Ross, 16, also paid close attention to the bits about education reform, but she was focused on Obama’s plea for bipartisanship in Washington. “He basically said under our current system we can’t progress and we won’t make advancement on these issues,” she said, echoing her colleagues’ concerns. “One of the things we talk about at Junior Statesmen is fostering civil discourse … which has taught me to understand the opposing side … and learn how to compromise. That’s something that really needs to be implemented in the real world of politics.”

Hollywood mourns loss of Indie film visionary (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The film community is mourning the death of Indie veteran Bingham Ray on Monday following a stroke.

Ray was only 57 when he died after suffering a stroke at the Sundance Film Festival.

Head of the San Francisco Film Festival when he died, Ray had been a co-founder of October Films, and later headed United Artists.

October was folded into USA Films, which later became Focus Features. And on Monday, James Schamus, CEO of Focus Features, mourned the loss of his fellow indie veteran.

“All of us at Focus are blessed to know that Bingham — the very definition of an independent spirit — is part our DNA,” Schamus said in a statement to TheWrap. “If anyone could claim paternity of us, it would be he.

“I wish, on behalf of all my colleagues here, I had something meaningful and resonant to say, but the loss is too sudden and too great — I simply refuse, at least for this one day, to speak of Bingham in the past tense.”

“It’s a tremendous loss,” Joe Pichirallo, a former producer who is now undergraduate chair of the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film & Television at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, told TheWrap. “He will be remembered for his charm, wicked humor and his passion for films. No one was more passionate about films than Bingham.”

One of the first things Pichirallo did upon joining NYU was ask Bingham to teach strategies for independent film producing.

“I knew he’d be a great teacher because he has been a great mentor, and I’m so glad he had that opportunity,” Pichirallo said.

Eddie Schmidt, the Academy Award-nominated producer of the 2006 “This Film Is Not Yet Rated,” remembered Ray as “a protector and defender of artists and their visions.”

He said that Ray was “tenacious and adaptable to the times as things change in the industry, and those are qualities that are rare.”

Ray appeared in “This Film Is Not Yet Rated,” in which he said, describing the MPAA ratings board, “I’m going to use the F-word. It’s a fascist system. I believe it’s a fascist organization.”

Schmidt recalled the movie’s premiere at, in fact, the Sundance Film Festival.

“He was there,” Schmidt said, “and he slapped me on the back and said, ‘Way to go,’ and that was actually very meaningful.”

In an email to TheWrap, the critic Roger Ebert said that “at every festival I attended, Bingham was always there, always friendly, never rushed, always curious, always searching for good films. He had good taste, and sometimes was more optimistic about a film’s box office prospects than its makers were. Outside the business, people like Bingham Ray are below the radar, but any movie lover checking his credits at IMDb would realize they had many reasons to be thankful to him.”

“I am shocked and heartbroken by his passing,” said Chris McGurk, who knew Ray for 20 years. “He was a brilliant, supportive voice for independent film and we will all miss him dearly,” he told TheWrap. “His passion, fire and spirit will live on inside all of us who knew him and whose lives he touched. My heart goes out to his wife, Nancy, and his family.

McGurk, now the CEO of Cinedigm Corp., is the former vice chair and COO of MGM and the former president and COO of Universal Pictures. While at MGM, he brought Ray on as president of United Artists. When he was at Universal, that company bought October Films.

Rick Allen, the CEO of SnagFilms and Indiewire — where Ray was a consultant — said in a statement that “the film world knew him as a fierce champion of artists, always looking for new ways to spotlight their work and increasing their freedom to create it. At SnagFilms and Indiewire, we knew this track record when we asked Bingham to join us and help chart the next phase of our growth.”

He added, “What I did not know until we had the chance to work together was how brilliant, honorable and hysterically funny Bingham Ray was.”

Allen said that Ray “taught all of us the context for our efforts — the history of independent film in and before our time. … He infused everything with his unquenchable passion for film, filmmakers and the audiences who love them. And he made us laugh very, very hard and often.”

Teri Schwartz, dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, called Ray “a true visionary” who was “universally respected by the entire filmmaking community. He was a friend, supporter and mentor to so many filmmakers. His remarkable intellect, generous spirit and passion for films will be sorely missed.”

Afghan president sends condolences to France

(AP) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai offered his condolences to France’s defense minister on Sunday, following the killing of four French troops by an Afghan soldier.

The shooting Friday in eastern Afghanistan provoked a sharp reaction from Paris, prompting President Nicolas Sarkozy to suspend training missions and threaten to withdraw French troops early from the country.

On Sunday, Karzai met with French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet in Kabul and discussed the killings and Afghan-French relations.

Karzai’s office said Longuet still sounded prepared to sign a long-term partnership to keep French forces in Afghanistan for years. The Afghan government expects the deal to be signed next week, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai.

The shooting last week was the second in which an Afghan soldier has turned on French forces since France first sent forces here, and the latest in a rising number of assaults in which Afghan security forces or infiltrators have turned their guns on coalition troops.

Before the meeting with Karzai, Longuet said his mission in Kabul was to “evaluate the attitude our officials should take” in the future.

Karzai’s office said the Afghan government is investigating the shooting.

“France is an old and sincere historic friend of the Afghan nation and has remained as such,” Karzai told Longuet, according to the statement, in an apparent move to smooth out relations.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe spoke by phone Saturday night with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton about the French troops’ deaths and Paris’ intentions in Afghanistan.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Longuet will give Sarkozy a report on his visit to Kabul. The president will then “draw all the conclusions from the attack,” the ministry said, in a reference to whether Paris will maintain its mission in the coalition.

Karzai is to visit Paris on Jan. 27, a trip scheduled before the killings.

Longuet’s trip coincides with a visit by the U.S. envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman, who began meeting with Karzai and Afghan officials on Saturday. The U.S. is trying to negotiate its own long-term partnership agreement, along with supporting plans to bring the Taliban insurgency into formal talks for the first time.

Elusive Z- DNA found on nucleosomes

Friday, January 20, 2012

New research published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Cell & Bioscience is the first to show that left-handed Z-DNA, normally only found at sites where DNA is being copied, can also form on nucleosomes.

The structure of DNA which provides the blueprint for life has famously been described as a double helix. To save space inside the nucleus, DNA is tightly wound around proteins to form nucleosomes which are then further wound and compacted into chromatin, which is further compacted into chromosomes.

But this familiar image of a right handed coil (also called B-DNA) is not the only form of DNA. At sites where DNA is being copied into RNA (the messenger which is used as the instruction to make proteins) the DNA needs to unwind, and, in a process of negative supercoiling, can form a left-handed variety of the DNA double helix (Z-DNA).

It was originally thought that Z-DNA could only be formed in the presence of active RNA polymerase (the enzyme which assembles RNA). However more recently it has been discovered that SWI/SNF, a protein involved in remodeling nucleosomes and allowing RNA polymerase access to DNA, can convert certain sequences of B to Z-DNA.

The team of researchers led by Dr Keji Zhao discovered that they could convert B-DNA to Z-DNA on nucleosomes by the addition of SWI/SNF and ATP (the cell’s energy source) and that the Z-nucleosome formed was a novel structure.

Dr Zhao, from the NIH, explained, “The fact that we have found Z-DNA on nucleosomes is a new step in understanding the roles of chromosome remodeling and Z-DNA in regulating gene expression. While the Z-nucleosome is likely to be a transient structure it nevertheless provides a window of opportunity for the placement of DNA binding proteins which may recruit, regulate, or block the transcription machinery and hence protein expression.”

Rivals pass on criticizing Gingrich’s marital woes

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich’s Republican rivals are not eager to criticize him on his marital woes.

Gingrich’s ex-wife says in an interview with ABC News that the former House speaker asked her for an open marriage.

In a nationally televised debate Thursday night, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul were asked whether Gingrich’s past infidelity is relevant to the campaign.

Romney says it’s time to get on to the real issues.

Santorum says the U.S. is a forgiving country and that no one is perfect. He adds that it’s up to voters in South Carolina to decide if the matter is relevant.

Paul says the attacks on Gingrich are being generated by the media. But he adds that he’s proud his wife of 54 years is with him.
